Moving down the Okavango river into the central Moremi Game Reserve,we visit the Gadikwe and Gobega lagoons where, from mid September, the breeding heronries amongst the Fig Islands in the lagoons are phenomenal.

Purple Herons, Squacco and Rufous-Bellied Herons keep to the inner thicket of these Islands, whereas the Yellow-Billed and Marabou Storks nest on the upper canopy. From there we travel the river Southward, toward the lower end of the Okavango river to where it meets and joins up with the Boteti river just South of the town of Maun.

An interesting river, dominated by livestock feeding along it’s edges, there seems little room for the birder….but you’ll be surprised..!
