The drama is set on the banks of the Luangwa River in Zambia. It is a river of extremes. In the wet season it is a flooded valley, but in the dry season it undergoes a massive change. A few struggling pools are all that is left of the once mighty river and they are now crammed with fractious hippos. Stressed out by the heat and lack of water, they are surrounded by a healthy population of scavenging crocodiles.

On the banks of the river lives a pride of lions. The mother of two newborn cubs in the pride will soon be involved in the final showdown this summer. The conditions are the cause: the youngsters the catalyst: but the battle is entirely their own. A lioness, a hippo and a crocodile are on a potentially fatal collision course on a riverbank in Africa to determine who the victor of this Deadly Summer will be.

Only the fittest survive the annual crossing of the crocodile-infested Mara and the extreme drought of the Luangwa Valley. There are many hazards that surround these rivers of the African continent.

With cunning and opportunistic hunters lurking beneath the waters or patrolling the banks, Rivers of Danger is a predator’s domain – a world where the hunter must use every skill at their disposal to survive…..

Seven great rivers: the life blood of Africa, but also host to some of her most deadly creatures. Predators and prey come face to face at the waters edge, drawn together by their need for water, turning the rivers into battlegrounds. From the crafty water spider to the savage crocodiles, the rivers prove that deadly killers come in all shapes and sizes. But predators are not the only threats that the rivers hold: far more devastating are their dramatic seasonal changes. The great Luangwa river of Zambia dries to a trickle in winter, leaving devastation in it’s wake: hippos crush together in the overcrowded shallows: while hungry scavengers pick off weaklings whose reserves have been drained by the drought. In Kenya’s Mara river, crocodiles take easy picking as millions of wildebeest barge through the river and up the narrow banks in their seasonal migration. Rivers of Danger explores the murky depths and perilous banks of seven of Africa’s most notorious rivers!

Dereck and Beverly Joubert, filmmakers, researchers and National Geographic Explorers-in-Residence have worked with lions in Botswana for over 25 years trying to discover as much as they can about these big cats, unraveling many myths, and unveiling new behavior to science.

Their films Eternal Enemies, Relentless Enemies and Ultimate Enemies have won dozens of awards across the globe and world acclaim. Today though, they change gears and set out to study a different cat. They struggle to adapt to the new habitat, a different pace, and a very elusive cat challenges their resolve. But when they find a leopard of 8 days old their lives change. As they follow the cub and her mother, two wild leopards in the Mombo area, a special kind of bond starts to develop between the humans and these elusive cats.

For many years viewers around the world have asked to see how the Joubert's work, a behind the scenes look at what makes a major National Geographic documentary and at last we have it in this work.

While the species is becoming endangered elsewhere in Africa Botswana's herds are thriving and provide the ideal situation for this film; an open range of many thousands of elephants.

The story of two young calves is the hinge for investigating the lives of all elephants as they march for the water they need so desperately each year. For the first time serious contact between lions and elephants appears on film as with the underwater sequences as they swim across the Chobe River.

When an old bull elephant dies, the resulting behaviour of other elephants is astounding. A haunting ritual, not unlike ancient burials is displayed, just one of the many facets of discovery in this filmatic exploration of their behaviour. This suggests a greater intelligence than we thought.

Considering the logical rescues of calves stuck in mud, their language skills, the compassion and caring attitudes to one another and, on some occasions, to other species, the investigations of the dead and these rituals, it is hard to leave them without a certain amount of reflection, not only on their behaviour, but on ours too.

The film shows, in intimate detail, the struggles between these two enemies and the extreme hunting of lions in this deep swamp water. It also tells the story of this pride's own struggle within their group, a battle that could endanger the survival of the whole pride of lions. So this is a race to survive by both the buffalo and the lions that hunt them so relentlessly.

It is the third of a trilogy that started for the filmmakers, Dereck and Beverly Joubert, with Eternal Enemies and then Ultimate Enemies, all three now, about the extreme relationships that lions have with three different counter species, that reveal a more in depth layer of lion life than ever before seen.

One elephant collapses and the lions come out of the shadows.
